Class of 2023: BS MBE and Political Science
Why did you major in MBE or ECON?
I took Professor Lee's ECON 001 class and thoroughly enjoyed learning about economics, and thought it paired well with my political science degree. After taking some more economics classes, I found another incredible set of professors, students and classes that made my UC Merced experience even better
Did you participate in clubs, social orgs, research, or internships while at UC Merced? How did they shape your experience?
I participated in the UC Investments Academy, which allowed me two separate internships: one in a hedge fund in New York City my junior year summer, and another with the UC Investments Team in Oakland after I graduated. These experiences prepared me for the real world and aided me in bridging the passion I had for the law and finance.
How did your MBE/ECON degree help prepare you for your career?
My MBE degree was vital for having a comfort with numbers that is vital to any conversation involving private equity or finance broadly, it allowed me to learn Excel skills, and gave me a wonderful set of amazing professors to learn from, who I have the good fortune of keeping in touch with to this day.
What advice would you give incoming UC Merced students?
Try Everything. There are so many incredible professors, clubs, and opportunities available to students both on campus and around the city (and country) and taking advantage of meeting all sorts of different people and faculty who really are genuinely invested in helping you find the place that is the best fit for you was instrumental in me ending up where I am today.
What skills or habits have helped you the most in your career?
The joy that I have for getting to know people and their stories has been one of the most beneficial parts of my college and career life. There are many people I have been fortunate to ask for advice from, who have helped me in difficult times with challenging decisions, and who have helped me navigate through my UC Merced and career experiences.
