Class of 2022: BS Management Business and Economics Minor Sociology
Why did you choose to attend UC Merced?
I decided to go to UC Merced because I wanted to experience a different setting outside of Los Angeles. UC Merced was my first choice since it was close enough to home where I can take a single train ride, but far enough where I can have independence. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made since during my undergrad, I have met a lot of wonderful friends and mentors. UC Merced gave me a opportunity to meet different people from different backgrounds and build meaningful connections!
Why did you major in MBE or ECON?
I majored in MBE because my dad was a huge influence for me. Growing up, I would always remember working alongside with him selling tamales on the streets at Boyle Heights. Throughout my childhood, I learned the importance of running a small family business takes a lot of time, dedication and risk. This influenced me so much that during my high school years, I also ran a little business of my own selling chips and drinks as a side hustle. When I read that UC Merced had an MBE major, I knew I had to apply since I wanted to learn more about businesses and how economics play a role in affecting these industries we hear about day to day.
What did you enjoy most about the MBE/ECON program at UC Merced?
Was there a class or professor that left a lasting impression on you?
I would say Dr. Jason Lee has left a lasting impression on me. During my 3rd semester of college, I decided to attend one of his office hour sessions. At first, it was to just talk about class work and assignments. But over time, I started seeing myself attending office hours just to hangout with him and other students. His easy nature and personality made him fun to hang around with, even outside of class. His dedication to his craft and his vast knowledge of economics made his classes more enjoyable to sit through! I would say that with his lecturing style, it made the class engaging and fun to attend.
What has your career journey been like since graduating?
As of currently, I have been working as a Senior Investments Operations Associate at Capital Group within the ADAPT (Accounting, Distributions and Pricing) Team. I have just completed my 3rd year of working at the company in August. It has been a great experience getting to know others while learning the overall investment space related to mutual funds and ETFs. I plan to further work with my company and see where I'm at in the next couple of years.
Anything you wish you’d done differently in college to prepare for your career?
One thing I would have done differently is not be afraid to apply to different internships/opportunities for growth and development. If I realized this sooner, then I would have made more meaningful connections for my career.
What advice would you give incoming UC Merced students?
Take advantage of office hours and other additional resources! Many students don' t take advantage of the available resources that help them succeed throughout their undergrad program. If a professor offers time to have study sessions and/or test reviews, go to them! I feel like the more resources you utilized, the less stress you'll have to worry about when doing homework and studying for exams!
