The Economics and Business Management Department is proud to recognize Brandon Castaneda as the 2025 Outstanding Graduating Student in Management and Business Economics (MBE). Brandon's academic journey at UC Merced reflects an extraordinary blend of intellectual curiosity, leadership, and service—making him a standout among this year’s graduating class.
Brandon’s academic career has been marked by a deep commitment to research. As a participant in the prestigious UCDC program, he worked with the Government Accountability Office (GAO), conducting data-driven policy analysis using Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) datasets. His work identified key trends in kinship placements and federal support programs, directly contributing to a broader government report on the effectiveness of federal assistance initiatives.
In addition to his UCDC experience, Brandon collaborated with faculty on multiple research projects at UC Merced. Including with Professor Elaine Denny in Political Science and Professor Christian Fons-Rosen in Economics. He was also selected for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), where he conducted an independent research project with Professor Justin Hicks examining the impact of immigration on U.S. counties, using IPUMS census data and econometric modeling to assess GDP and labor market dynamics.
Beyond the classroom, Brandon has distinguished himself as a campus leader. As Executive Vice President of the Business Society, he organized career development workshops, company site visits—including a major visit to Cisco—and professional networking events that connected students to industry professionals. Within Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity, Brandon helped spearhead an Alumni Career Fair, introducing innovative engagement strategies like networking bingo and speed networking to maximize student participation.
His dedication to service is equally commendable. As a Fiat Lux mentor, Brandon supported first-generation, low-income students through academic planning, leadership development, and community building. He also helped facilitate campus-wide engagement workshops, creating a more inclusive and supportive academic environment. Through Philanthropy Week with Delta Sigma Pi, he helped raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities, further demonstrating his commitment to service beyond campus.
“Brandon is one of the best students I’ve had the privilege to work with at UC Merced,” said Professor Lee. “I’ve known him all four years—from a quiet first-year student to a confident leader who isn’t afraid to tell me when I’m wrong. His growth has been incredible, and I have no doubt he will go on to do great things.”
Brandon Castaneda exemplifies the mission of UC Merced and the MBE program: to develop thoughtful, engaged, and community-oriented leaders. We congratulate him on this well-deserved honor and look forward to seeing the impact he’ll continue to make in the world.
